Short Term
30-60 Day
This program would primarily target first time offenders, as well as those youth with a short history of delinquency. Throughout the youths stay, there will be at least 3 written summaries. These will include: Case Service Plan, Progress Report, and Discharge Summary. This program will be highly structured and intense. The youth will participate in school, complete community service hours, as well as participate in group meetings, anger management classes, a live skills course, and Chemical Dependency classes. The youth will learn to follow rules, norms and expectations of society. Learning respect for each other is a big factor to the program.
60-90 Day
This program is designed to target previous offenders who have continued in the wrong direction. These youth will also have written documentation to outline their progress throughout the program. This program is based on the same criteria as the 30-45 Day program, but gives youth additional time to work on their areas of concern and reach their goals successfully.
SYS is IV-E Eligible
Age: 10-19
Population: Male
Long Term
The Positive Peer Culture group therapy provides the primary treatment modality at SYS. Individual counseling is also an important part of the programming.
Built around groups of 9-11 youth, under the guidance of an adult leader, Positive Peer Culture (PPC) is designed to “turn around” a negative youth subculture and mobilize power of the peer group in a productive manner. Youth in PPC groups learn how to identify problems and work toward their solution. In group sessions and in day-to-day activities, the goal is to fully involve young people in the helping process.
Positive Peer Culture does not seek to impose specific rules, but to teach basic values. PPC is not a permissive, laissez-faire approach, but places considerable demands on youth. Although adults remain in charge, young people have the responsibility of helping one another. If there were one rule, it would be that people must care for one another.
